Loie Fuller/Serpentine Dance 1896

Loie Fuller. American born 1863 (Chicago,IL) made famous in Paris for her pioneering of modern dance and theatrical lighting. Filmed by the Lumiere Brothers in 1896 Paris, France, each frame was hand painted to achieve the various hues (which reminds me of modern day artist, Rey Parla's work on film). The cinematograph was also new at this time. The artists of that era amaze me. They literally created something out of nothing. It was revolutionary in the art world. No human had invented or eye seen. This is so fascinating. I am in awe.

This movie was produced in collaboration between the scratch

film maker Rey Parla and digital movie maker Michael Betancourt.

It developed from several years of discussions about collaborating

on a project, and finally began when Parla sent a drive with

material to Betancourt in the summer of 2011, which he then

combined with some of his own material.

The finished movie is a dialouge between their approaches and

techniques, combining scratch, glitch, analog processing and digital

compositing to create a hybrid.

THE REVOLUTION OF SUPER 8 UNIVERSE: A SELF-PORTRAIT BY REY PARLA

Brooklyn based artist/filmer Rey Parla' composes hand

painted abstract film palimpsests using super 8mm film.

Parla' creates layers upon celluloid with techniques of

scratching, rubbing strips together, spitting, cloth, water

and paint... to name a few). If you watch closely, you will

see Parla's self-portrait (still photograph) embeded into

the film.

It's such an amazing process and phenomenal work!
