FIRST FRIDAY ARTWALK

8/5/11

A beautiful yet hot evening for August's
First Friday Art Walk. Covered a lot of
ground with my buddies. Here's what captured
my attention this month...

SARANAC ART PROJECTS:

SORT: A tribute to the American Worker.
Performance art by Artist Bernadette
Vielbig. Using various pieces of collected
colorful 'garbage,' Bernadette categorizes
and arranges each into a beautiful
spectrum of color. It's not so much
what the end result is as much as the
process itself, she told us. This work
comes from the artist's experience working
in auto & industry manufacturing.

Items used in the work will be available
for purchase, signed by the artist at the
end of the exhibition. Items will be priced
according to hourly scale wages.
Be sure to go and see the work(er), as the
space will change consistently through the
month.

And the walk back...

____________________________________________
Art Walk. It's a great opportunity to get
out and see what kind of art is being
created in our city... and there's some
really excellent stuff. Here are a few
highlights from yesterday evening's walk:

SEXT
Kolva-Sullivan Gallery

SEXT is a text art installation and book
(put on by local artist group 'Boys Who
Like Butterflies')covering the topic of
gender and sexuality.
The words written and pasted in black
Helvetica font by national and regional
artists, speak out loud from the crisp
white walls. I was told that if the text
were in a continual line, it would extend
3 blocks.

Proceeds from the limited edition artist
book will benefit the YMCA Spokane. Live
performance to be held @ The Kolva-Sullivan
Gallery April 16, 6-8pm. $5 donation of bras
or underwear at the door also for the YMCA.

DJ Likes Girls Boombox pulsated a mini
light show triggered by the beats!

Stumbled onto a show hosted by an empty
business space. Am not sure if this
enormous moose head was apart of the
exhibit or not. Did not flow with the vibe.
He was a cute little guy though showing
off his last sweet expression. Sad... and
creepy.

SKIN and EARTH
Saranac Art Projects

One of the last galleries we stopped by
was @ The Saranac. Brilliant show!
Aritst Margot Casstevens draws imagery onto
layers of rice paper from paintings of 15th
century Hieronymus Bosch... laminated
together. She then casts into molds.
AMAZING work.
